This program will be a little different from our ordinary brewing demos. I am going to not start a fire and we have plenty of beer that has been previously brewed. I am going to give a talk and go deep on some of the significant differences between 21st Century brewing and beers and what we do as 18th Century Journeyman Brewers. We will talk about the tools, the available materials, the lack of technology and how we cope. We will delve into the “art” of brewing rather than the science (although a bit of science may creep in). We’ll talk about how brewing was an immersive experience and how we had to brew using our five basic senses — What does it feel like, how does it look, smell, taste, and sound?

In the 18th Century, beer was critical to survival. Everyone drank beer — men, women and children. Beer was given to slaves and soldier to keep them healthy. Beer was so critical to life in colonial America that every household brewed and itinerant journeyman brewers made the circuit from tavern to tavern and from manor to manor replenishing stores.

Samples of 18th Century beer will be provided and we will weave in a few fun little side stories to make this a must not miss event. Oh, it’s also free so why not come out.

My goal is to bring history alive through interactive portrayal of ordinary American life in the late 18th Century (1750—1799) My persona are: Journeyman Brewer; Cordwainer (leather tradesman but not cobbler), Statesman and Orator; Chandler (candle and soap maker); Gentleman Scientist; and, Soldier in either the British Regular Army, the Centennial Army, or one of the various Militia. Let me help you experience history 1st hand!
