Huzzah for backward thinkers!  Now that Brexit is complete, great morons like Boris Johnson (Britian’s Trump) want to bring back Imperial metrics and where do they want to start, well your beer glass.

Beginning in 1698 British pint glasses intended for measuring and serving beer were marked with a crown stamp as a declaration that the glass, when filled to the brim or to a line measure, accurately measured a pint of beer. The crown stamp therefore gave customers confidence that they were not being sold a short measure of beer. The mark  took the form of an image of the St Edward’s Crown with the identification number of the trading standards inspector or government-approved verifier underneath.   This marking is a declaration that the glass accurately measured a pint according to the royal definition (yep, we’re talking Henry VIII) definition of a pint. In 2006 the crown stamp was replaced by the CE mark, which was a new conformity marking required by EU legislation.  Now this little line is a great thing.  It means that even if your bartender is a compete idiot (think Boris Johnson) and pours you a glass of foam, they must ensure that the LIQUID portion of your drink is at the fill line.  Too little and you don’t have to pay.  Too much and the taxman has a claim against them for evasion.  This practice (in Europe) dates back to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot or “purity laws” for beer. Not only did the Bavarians want to make sure you weren’t drinking pagan swill adulterated with all sorts of herbs and non-grain sugars, they wanted you to pay your taxes on beer, hence the line.
