Well, its official, we are now a theocracy according to SCOTUS.  They have placed us on the same shaky footing as Iran, Syria, Al Qa’ida, Al Shabaab, Hizballah, Hamas, the LRA, and all those other supporters of social and political terror in the world.  As of yesterday, it is now legal to use your religion as a weapon in the United States against people you deem “illegitimate.”  U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority on Friday ruled that the constitutional right to free speech allows certain businesses to refuse to provide services for same-sex weddings, a decision that the dissenting liberal justices called a “license to discriminate.”  It is now legal in 23 states to enforce CHRISTIAN prohibitions on abortion, it is now legal for CHRISTIAN groups in multiple local jurisdictions to censor books in libraries and classrooms, it is now illegal in Florida for any form of public expression that “offends sensibilities” and by that they mean CHRISTIAN sensibilities. 

In a dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote: “Today, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class.”  Sotomayor said that the decision’s logic “cannot be limited to discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.”  How long will it be before this same precedent is used to justify denying service (or worse justice) to people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants (legal or illegal), or people who don’t practice the extreme right’s version of Christianity?  How far are we today from the Nazi concentration camps our grandfathers fought to liberate?  How far are we, really, from the political situation that caused people who founded our nation to endure a transatlantic trip in the 17^th and 18^th Centuries to escape political and social tyranny? 

I don’t really know where I stand on LGBTQ rights.  I am, honestly, laisse faire on this subject – it does not hurt anyone so why all the turmoil.  I do, however, know where I stand on HUMAN and CIVIL rights.  Its time to throw the tea in the harbor.  If it is legal for Lorie Smith (a web designer from Colorado about whom this case was brought) to discriminate against people SHE finds religiously offensive, Then its legal for ME. 

My religion teaches hospitality toward the stranger, tolerance for those different, charity toward those in need, and compassion.  There are limits on what I will personally do (certain things I don’t eat, times I don’t work, etc.) but these apply to ME not others.  Freedom of religion is there to allow each of us to follow our own religious beliefs, standards, and practices – NOT TO IMPOSE THEM ON OTHERS.

SCOTUS ruled otherwise this week.  So, if you represent intolerance (eg wearing a MAGA hat or pushing the fascist agenda), if you favor the abusing others who have done nothing to you, if you believe that the United States is a Christian nation to be ruled by Christian and only Christian ideals; then from henceforth, PLEASE FUCK OFF!  Go away, I don’t have to tolerate you. I can actively discriminate against you. It’s the law of the land, according to SCOTUS.

I am an artist.  I make beer.  Most of you are also artist.  You might be an accounting artist, or a driving artist, maybe you are a legal or medical artist, or even a sales artist; we all create; and now, according to SCOTUS if we don’t like each other, well we should deny service.  THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD CAN FUCK OFF! In a couple of months of this “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” will leave us all blind and toothless.

Are we Americans, who have fought for 250 years to make our imperfect nations “a more perfect union” or are we medieval serfs who go to war over matters of Church?   Are we the greatest secular nation on Earth where “all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, including Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” or are we are we a state supporter of Radical Christian Terrorism?
