When reenacting or acting as a historical interpreter, its good to have a few historical dates and stories to share. This series will publish a few.
December 31, 1775 General Montgomery killed
General Richard Montgomery launched a courageous attack on the lower city of Quebec (along the river beneath the walls) in the middle of a snowstorm. Montgomery had many factors in his favor including a full moon, a drunken British Army celebrating the New Year, and the snow. During the opening charge, Montgomery led from the front, yelling to his men, “Push on brave boys, Quebec is ours!” The attack, however, was doomed to failure, and Montgomery was killed by a point-blank blast of grapeshot from a hidden British position. The remaining forces, confused and blinded by the snow, retreated from the city.

He was Irish – and became a hero to Irish-Americans for generations. Many Irish militia units in America were named after him.
