When reenacting or acting as a historical interpreter, its good to have a few historical dates and stories to share. This series will publish a few.

June 19, 1775     Washington chosen as Commander-in-Chief.  

When George Washington arrived at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on May 9, 1775, he was placed on several committees that handled military preparedness in the colonies. Washington had a respected military reputation based on his time serving in the French and Indian War.  Washington also arrived wearing a buff and blue colored uniform sewn by an indentured servant at Mount Vernon named Andrew Judge.  This military mindedness as well as a hope of gaining a coalition that included Virginia were key reasons that John Adams suggested George Washington be named Commander-In-Chief to lead the new Continental Army rather than his fellow delegate from Massachusetts, John Hancock.
