Opening Doors to France — Francis Daymond

Francis Daymon, was a Frenchman hired by Benjamin Franklin as librarian for his Library Company at Carpenter’s Hall.  Daymon served as translator and organizer for meetings between Julien-Alexandre Achard de Bonvouloir, a former French Army officer who retired to Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin and John Jay.  Frankin and Jay were key members of the Committee of Secret Correspondence for the First Continental Congress and Bonvouloir unofficially represented the interests of Louis XVI of France.  Three lengthy nighttime meetings occurred between December 18 and 27, 1775 culminating with Bonvouloir’s report to France that the colonial revolt well organized and its soldiers determined but it would end in defeat without arms and supplies from abroad.  Eager to retake lands lost in the Seven Years War, Bonvouloir urged Louis to accept delegates from the Continental Congress and supply arms and engineers to the cause.  Silas Deane was accepted but aid from France would not materialize until 1777.
