Perhaps its just that sort of week for me but its definitely 5:00 HERE so here are some terms to take with you to your local watering hole to show you understand the drinking habits of we merry 18th Century barmen…

  • Bene Bowse — good beer, or other strong liquor
  • Bingo — brandy or other spirituous liquor
  • Black Strap –“bene carlo” or port wine
  • Bristol Milk — sherry, particularly when drunk in the morning
  • Calibogus — rum mixed with spruce beer – a truly American beverage
  • Cool Nantz — brandy
  • Doctor — milk or cream with a little rum and some nutmeg (add eggs for eggnog!)
  • Flip –small beer, brandy and sugar (often adding a raw egg)
  • Freeze — small (low ABV) hard cyder
  • Fuddle — any alcoholic drink or cocktail
  • Hearts Ease — gin
  • Huckle My Butt — heated beer, egg and brandy
  • Pharoah — strong malt liquor (like an abby triple)
  • Stewed Quaker — burned rum with a piece of butter — an American remedy for the common cold
  • Toddy — tea and sugar with a gil of whiskey
