AKA Samuel Culper Sr — Abraham Woodhull

Abraham Woodhull was the main spy in a spy network that would eventually be known as the Culper Spy Ring. He was recruited by Benjamin Tallmadge, who after the death of Nathan Hale, sought to create a well-organized and TRAINED set of spies that could evade detection while serving the Continental Army.  This spy ring was so well secured that we really only learned the identity of its spies in the early 20th century. Abraham Woodhull’s recruitment was not a coincidence. He was the son of Judge Richard Woodhull of Setauket, New Yok.  His cousin, Brigadier General Nathanael Woodhull, was captured by the British and was thrown into a prison ship in New York harbor where he died of wounds he received while imprisoned.  Natheniel Woodhull’s death and treatment would become a major factor in Woodhull’s decision to become a spy.  Woodhull’s prominent family and farm in in British-occupied Long Island provided him with a perfect cover.  Woodhull’s farm and his connections to Judge Woodhull allowed his frequent visits to British-occupied New York City, the British Army’s North American headquarters.  A true spy, Woodhull even swore allegiance to the Crown, giving him additional cover.  Woodhull operated under the alias Samuel Culper Sr.
