The Intolerable Acts were a series of laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 to punish the American colonies for the Boston Tea Party.  Following the Seven Years War, Parliament was strapped for cash.  Add to this rampant corruption in the world’s largest corporation – the East India Company, and Parliament’s bail-out, urged but MPs with huge personal losses due to their association with the company, and you see why a corrupt government would attempt to steal prosperity from its North American Colonies. 

Today, we find ourselves in a similar situation.  Donald Trump nearly bankrupted the country in 2019 and then engaged in an attempted coup état in January 2021 after losing an election.  Out of power, he, like the EIC, was facing criminal and civil punishments for his misdeeds (both in and out of office); and like the EIC, he used mafia like tactics to ensure that over 6 million votes were nullified so that he could regain power.  He is now looking for a means of settling his debts and engaging in his own series of Coercive Acts in order to punish the American people.  Its time it stopped! 

In 1773, the Sons of Liberty had a protest culminating in the Boston Tea Party over Parliament’s charge demanding the American Colonies pay the debts of the British East India Company.  Americans saw this as a huge abuse of authority of corrupt MPs within the Parliament.  We like to make the argument about representation, but the facts were far simpler, Parliament did not have the authority to impose these acts but did so anyway.  Since taking office on January 21, Donald Trump has engaged in similar unconstitutional acts.  He has made edicts and proclamations that far exceed the authority granted the President under the US Constitution, and he has done so for explicit personal gain and to curry support of certain corrupt members of Congress and major corporations.  Its time it stopped! 

In December 1773, a new group calling itself the Sons of Liberty issued and distributed a declaration in New York City called the Association of the Sons of Liberty in New York, which formally stated that they were opposed to the Townsends Acts and that anyone who assisted in the execution of these acts was “an enemy to the liberties of America” and that “whoever shall transgress any of these resolutions, we will not deal with, or employ, or have any connection with him.”   This new group employed various tools of protest, targeted not directly at Parliament but rather at those who followed the orders of Parliament.  They used boycotts, blockades, pickets, and even more violent actions like riots and the use of tar and feathering to punish and humiliate offending government officials who carried out enforced these unconstitutional laws. 

Acts like this, obviously caused reactions.  Just as Trump is escalating his open warfare on American ideals and sovereignty, Parliament employed its own goon squad.  Trump brought in Elon Musk, a multibillionaire with a deep hatred of America and direct family ties to government of Germany’s deposed gestapo, to create chaos and economic disarray within the US Government.  Parliament appointed tax agents and enlisted Warren Hastings, chairman of the EIC board, to assist in enforcing its edicts.  Both these men engaged in lawsuits, economic coercion, and finally, out violence to achieve their goals.  Meanwhile the Continental Congress attempted to appease Parliament and the King only to be rebuffed.

While Congress engaged in polite overtures and groveling, the Sons of Liberty made the situation so untenable for the King’s tax collectors that the Townsend Acts, like the Stamp Act before, were rescinded.  We’ve seen how standing up to our modern tyrant has caused him to back down (Mexico is not paying for the “wall”; and Trump has reversed his tariffs on Canada and Mexico.  He will soon beg China for forgiveness as well).  Its time to keep up the pressure.

Sure, Trump is safe in the “Presidential bubble.”  Focus on his cronies.  You know who they are.  They brandish their red hats and trucks filled with flags proclaiming hatred of America.  Like the Sons of Liberty did in 1773, we need to isolate them.  We need to shame them.  We need to drive them out of our institutions and communities, with force if necessary.  Everyone who supports the current illegal government, everyone assists in the execution of unconstitutionally enacted laws is “an enemy to the liberties of America.“ Good, patriotic and loyal Americans must ensure that anyone who supports these executive orders becomes someone who we, “will not deal with, or employ, or have any connection with…”

Eventually, we will win this war on decency.  As Martin Luther King said, “The arc of the Moral Universe is long, but it bends toward Justice.”   Now is the time to ramp up our displeasure.  How long will Musk agree to occupy DC offices if we start ransacking and burning his down like we did to Governor Hutchenson when he defied the Sons of Liberty. 

Gather round the Liberty Tree.  Do not be bullied into submission!

In a chariot of light, from the regions of day, The Goddess of Liberty came,
Ten thousand celestials directed her way,

And hither conducted the dame: A fair budding branch from the gardens above, Where Millions with millions agree,

She brought in her hand as a pledge of her love, And the plant she nam’d Liberty Tree.
This blooming exotick stuck deep in the ground, Like a native it flourish’d  and bore,

The fame of its fruits drew the nations around, To seek out this peaceable shore.
But, Americans, hear—’tis a tale most prophane,
How a wicked assemblage of powers— Riot, Discord and Britain [MAGA] are uniting a main, To cut down this Garden of ours.

Then from east to the west let our Patriots convene, Determin’d their country to free,
Our Constitution confirm—it firmly shall fix, Its idol—our Liberty Tree.
