Tavernkeeper is the ideal cover — Jonas Hawkins and Austin Roe

Jonas Hawkins ran a general store in Stony Brook New York.  He and his wife made a number of trips into New York City to purchase dry goods and other items for their general store and this cover allowed him to gather information on British troop strength, artillery, and shipping that he then supplied to Washington through the Setauket-based Culper Spy Ring.

Austin Roe was a tavern owner in Setauket, New York.   As part of the Culper Spy Ring, Roe would routinely ride 55 miles back and forth to New York City, where he would retrieve intelligence and transfer it to “Culper St.”  Roe was able to enter and leave New York by saying he was traveling to order supplies for his tavern, which often also served Loyalist militia and British patrols on whose activity and plans he also reported to Washington.
