March 4, 1797 John Adams inaugurated President
At the time of the founding of our republic, monarchs led nearly every other nation. Even as democratic systems began to spread, most countries adopted parliamentary systems where legislatures chose prime ministers to head their governments, but in the U.S. the election and transfer of power from one president to the next is almost routine. This peaceful transition of power was a completely new and untested idea in 1797 when John Adams became the second President of the United States and George Washington, calmly and quietly retired to his home at Mount Vernon.
Through the ages, a head of state either by military conquest or death. The only peaceful transitions of power occurred when sons took over the role of king from their fathers. In America, Presidents do not resist the transfer of power.
