I won’t burden my readers with the atrocities committed at the Philadelphia Renaissance Faire (one of which was a substantial loss to Fort Mifflin) but before anyone asks, the before anyone asks, I am not running nor attending the recently announced Colonial Cocktails or Cast-Iron Chef events at Fort Mifflin. Jefferson once wrote in a letter to James Madison: “I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.” My “little rebellion” is a separation from the day-to-day support of the fort in favor of some personal pursuits.
This summer, I will be pushing the following agenda:
- Seriously getting a commercial version of the Admiral of the Blue Apron either launched or finally set to rest. Randell Spackman and I have been discussing launching a commercial operation where we can actually sell you colonially inspired beers, ciders, meads, and cocktails. We hope to have this in place for the United States Semiquincentennial (2026). If we do not make significant progress this year, it will not happen.
- Drive more “for hire” engagements of the Regimental Brewmeister. This is the engine I use to pay for my blog, website, and field presentations (brewing, surveying, colonial science, spymaster, et al). If you have a site or event where you want to add excitement and authentic color, consider hiring Philadelphia’s best Colonial Brewer. Whether it is a reenactment, motion picture, a tavern night for a private event, or other endeavor, I can bring can bring a real sense of authenticity and fun to your event and make it an occasion that people will long remember. For more information see https://colonialbrewer.com/yes-you-can-hire-me-for-your-event-or-site/
- Add a few special series to my blog. I am considering a set of blog posts on:
- Big science of the 18th and early 19th Centuries
- The scourge of slavery and its origins in the British Mercantile system
- The American Revolutionary War as waged outside the 13 original colonies. If you have additional topics that you want me to consider, please send me a note to Colonialbrewer@gmail.com.
- Learn some new skills and develop some new impressions. Maybe even write another book.
- Focus a bit more on supporting a few other organizations including 1st Battalion of New Jersey Volunteers, 43rd Regiment of Foot, and Philadelphia Continental Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and its Color Guard
- Find a new site to engage with and expand my personal learning about local Revolutionary history and culture. If you are looking for a very serious and talented volunteer or casual employee (ie 6-10 hours a MONTH), let me know at Colonialbrewer@gmail.com.
My time at Fort Mifflin has been a very rewarding experience and I hope I have made an impact but it is time to move on to other endeavors.

Michael, Did someone actually steal a cannon from Fort Mifflin? That was the scuttlebutt from Monmouuth this last weekend. Just curious.

Its not scuttlebutt, its a fact. https://6abc.com/philadelphia-pa-fort-mifflin-cannon-stolen-philly-police/13373539/
It was stolen and it was stolen DURING the Philadelphia Renaissance Faire.
From my perspective, it was there on the evening of 5/26 when I went there with the team from Chatty Monks to discuss future taverns (now cancelled) and walked the wall. ?It was gone on 5/28 during the RenFaire. Its a cannon, it didn’t get picked up and casually carted off, this required effort and time.

The sad part of all this is that Steve Kopsick of our local Philadelphia Continental Chapter of SAR just arranged a sizable donation to the fort and now they have one less cannon.
