God, I hate election years (at least the most recent ones). The trend in America is to conduct HATE champaigns. Rather than tell me why I should vote for their candidate, BOTH the major parties like to focus on telling me why I should not vote for their opponent. In the end, we end up choosing the less bad candidate rather than the best. This is how we got Donald Trump in 2016, Joe Biden in 2020, and most likely Kamala Harris in 2024. We voted[i] for these people not because they were the best but because the other option was worse.
This is the product of a two-party system where we really only have one choice[ii] . I blame Thomas Jefferson and John Adams for this disaster. You see, the US Constitution eschews political parties. Originally, the two candidates with the most votes (often rivals) became President and Vice President. Jefferson ended that with the Twelfth Amendment which paired President and Vice President.
Jefferson may have fired the first mudslinging volley (through a proxy) but continuing the feud is the problem. Sure, our candidates should be able to stand up to all critics but when the criticisms are not factual, when they are just meant to incite fear, we are devolving into chaos. Despite John Adams assertion, Thomas Jefferson was not dead. Similarly, Kamala Harris for those who deal in facts, is clearly a black woman (despite Trump’s protestations that this is not true). Sure, 100 years from now, everyone will laugh but today it’s just hate speech.
Which brings me to my point.
Stop bringing me your political opinions. I don’t want to hear who you are voting for or why. Most of us have made up our minds and are not likely to change based on rhetoric and lies. I accept that many of you are opposed to the candidate that I favor, and THAT’S OKAY[iii] Just keep it to yourself. Don’t tell me what you think of classes of people (critical race theory, LBGTQ rights, gun control, etc.), I know some of you are underinformed or misinformed, I forgive you. And for G*d sake, keep your damn champaign propaganda out of my space.
People who come to my events in MAGA hats will be turned away. If you start an argument with people about politics in the space I have carved out for my brewing, tavern, or other space, I will insist you leave. TRAITORS will not be served.
Now that does not mean voting for the opposition is treason, far from it. Voting is, regardless of which party you vote for, is the 2nd greatest act of patriotism any citizen can do[iv]. Just follow the advice of VP candidate Tim Walz and “mind your own damn business!” and I will mind mine.
[i] Okay, I NEVER voted for Trump but that’s beside the point. Many did for the reasons stated above.
[ii] Yes, there are 3rd Party candidates but since they generally don’t garner enough votes to be viable, voting for them is seen as a distraction rather than a real option.
[iii] I think anyone who votes for a MAGA candidate after recent history is a moron but it’s okey that you are a moron. Not all of us are critical thinkers.
[iv] Serving your country is the first. Which makes draft dodgers, like Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, very unAmerican.
