Join us Sunday on the Square
Sunday, September 28th
11am-2pm
Rittenhouse Square

Join Historic RittenhouseTown, The Friends of Rittenhouse Square and the Common Press as we kick-off the 250th celebration early!

Step into history on the last Sunday in September with Sunday Open Streets at Rittenhouse Square for hands on traditional paper-making, and an opportunity to meet and learn traditional surveying from the namesake behind the Square, David Rittenhouse.

During the event, we will be collecting cotton and linen rags that will be processed into fiber for paper making and used to make a historically accurate replica of the Declaration of Independence.

RAGS WANTED
100% cotton or linen fabric
Examples: jeans, sheets, old table clothes and napkins, dress shirts, curtains, dresses.

Stains are ok! In 1776, people only donated cloth that had been thoroughly used. We will remove any buttons, metal tacks, zippers, etc. Please wash out excess dirt and dry items only. If you aren’t sure, donate the textile anyway. If it doesn’t make the mark, we will donate it to https://fabscrap.org/.

The Common Press’ Typography of Independence project, will explore publishing, printing, and papermaking processes as they were practiced in Philadelphia in 1776. It honors Philadelphia’s central role in the printing and production of the Declaration of Independence, highlighting the city’s legacy in both the history of American democracy and in the craft of letterpress printing and papermaking.

We hope to see you on the square!
